(6) THE PALETTE AND COLOUR MENUS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This chapter covers : SELECTING DIFFERENT INK COLOURS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IN-BUILT ANIMATED PALETTES
MIXING YOUR OWN COLOURS
CONTROLLING THE SPEED OF THE ANIMATED INK
THE UNDO BUTTON
6a THE COLOUR MENU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ILLUSIONS offers you 16 non-animated colours (of varying shades, all
of which can be altered to your own taste) and another 16 'animated'
or CYCLING colours, which can be completely altered at the click of an
icon to one of 30 attractive settings. The 'animated' colour can also
be switched off, giving you a total of 32 non-moving colours to play
with.
The COLOUR menu is constantly available for use. After moving onto
the drawing screen having selected a tool from a 'sub-menu' (eg. DRAW
or EFFECTS or SHAPES), clicking the RIGHT mouse button will instantly
take you to this powerful menu. From it, you may either select one of
it's features, or simply click the RIGHT button again to get back to
the 'sub-menu' you are currently working from.
PICKING AN INK COLOUR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The COLOUR menu has a large display of colours, any of which you can
click on with the LEFT mouse button to select as the current 'INK
colour'. The chosen colour will be displayed in a horizontal 'bar'
near the bottom of the menu. If you have selected a fill pattern, the
bar will contain this pattern in the current colour (see chapter 2 -
register your copy!!).
To select 'animated' ink, simply click anywhere on the cycling
colour displays. The bar at the bottom of the menu should begin to
flash - this indicates you have successfully chosen 'animated' ink and
all tools used from now on will take advantage of it's effect.
ALTERING THE SPEED OF THE ANIMATED INK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To control the speed at which the animated ink 'flows', simply click
on either of the two arrow icons at the top of the menu. The value
digit between them will either increase or decrease.
Note that : (a) 9... is the fastest speed forwards ( -> )
(b) -9... is the fastest speed backwards ( <- )
(c) 0... will cease animation altogether.
ALTERING THE ANIMATED COLOUR RANGES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the left of the UNDO icon you will notice another pair of '+' and
'-' (plus and minus) icons, with a small number printed between them.
This value corresponds to the number of the predefined colour palette
you are currently using. Initially, this value will be 1 (purple
background, green animated ink).
There are 10 different colour ranges available (30 in the registered
version!), each offering you a new dazzling rainbow effect. The first
4 or 5 colour palettes are perhaps the most powerful and effective.
Experiment! You can always come back to the palette you are using at
the moment.
THE UNDO BUTTON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the most useful (and most USED!) features of any art package
is the UNDO button, which simply 'un-does' (or goes back on) the last
action you performed on your picture. Note that UNDO will only work
whilst the COLOUR palette is active and on display. Once you go back
to a 'sub-menu', your picture will be saved into memory - hence you
can not UNDO any mistakes. A simple click on the words UNDO will
perform this very useful operation immediately.
THE PALETTE MIXER MENU ICON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The PALETTE menu is a powerful little accessory, available for use at
any time from within three different 'sub-menu's. These are:
(A) The MAIN menu
(b) The DRAW menu
(c) The COLOUR menu
The icon inside each of these menus remains the same - it is a simple
square box divided up into four segments of colour. Clicking on this
icon will take you into the PALETTE menu immediately.
6b THE PALETTE MENU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With this powerful menu, you can completely change the appearance of
any colour available to you - including the animated colours. Whenever
the PALETTE menu is on screen, the animated colours will cease moving.
This is perfectly normal - you can now edit any colour without having
to chase it with the mouse!
Each colour ILLUSIONS uses contains an amount of RED, GREEN and BLUE.
With the PALETTE menu, you can pick a colour from the display on the
right hand side, and then 'mix' more or less colour into it. This is
done by clicking on the plus and minus icons ("+" and "-") at the top
and bottom of the menu.
Draining all the RED, GREEN and BLUE out of a colour will slowly
darken it. When there is no colour at all, you will have a pure BLACK.
Similarly, the maximum amount of RED, GREEN and BLUE poured into one
colour will make WHITE.
Most art packages use a similar mixing technique. The best way to
learn about it is, as always, to experiment.
Upon exiting the PALETTE menu, your colours will resume animating,
each with their new alterations. Be warned that some colours will
alter the appearance of the pop-up menus themselves - for more details
about this, see chapter 8 (you'll have to register your copy first!).
